We wrote this book as a response to the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the 2005 tsunami in Indonesia, and so many other disasters, including tornados, floods, earthquakes, and wildfires. Crises and disasters continue to have direct impacts on families.

What motivated the writing of this book, and why we continue to update it continuously, is this fundamental principle – Every crisis is a human crisis.
